TRANSFUSION MEDICINE AND THERAPEUTIC PATHOLOGY

Blood Bank

Description

The blood bank and transfusion service provides the necessary pre-transfusion testing for the transfusion of over 65,000 blood and blood products per year in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). Testing platforms include conventional tube testing, automated and manual solid phase testing, and manual gel testing.  The reference lab section of the blood bank performs complex immunohematology testing and antibody identification methods. The blood bank also works up suspected transfusion reactions, prenatal and newborn antigen and antibody testing, and processes autologous and allogeneic blood collected in our Division’s Blood Collection Center. The blood bank is accredited by the AABB and CAP.
