Shaping the Future of Medicine:
Penn Medicine Pavilion Opens to Patients
Saturday, October 30, 2021 marked a major milestone in the storied history of Penn Medicine – the official opening of the Pavilion, the 1.5 million-square-foot expansion of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). The new 17-story facility houses 504 private patient rooms, 47 operating rooms, and a larger, state-of-the-art emergency department. With innovation, sustainability, and an improved patient experience at the heart of its design, the Pavilion was built to support the future of medicine.
The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine inhabits over 6,000 net square feet of dedicated space in the new Pavilion. The 3 Campus lab is home to Surgical Pathology and Neuropathology space, a Central Receiving area for all Pavilion-collected samples, Point-of-Care Testing offices and instrumentation, and a satellite Core Laboratory (ready for activation when necessary). The satellite Blood Bank on 5 Center supports the Pavilion operating rooms, emergency department, CT ICU, and exsanguinations throughout the building. A work space on 7 Campus is reserved for the phlebotomists providing round-the-clock care for a variety of inpatient units in the Pavilion. - continued on next page-
