The Robarts Research Institute at Western University in London, Ontario, recently announced that Drs. John Q. Trojanowski and Virginia M.-Y. Lee are co-recipients of the 2014 J. Allyn Taylor International Prize in Medicine for outstanding contributions made in the area of the molecular basis of neurological disorders. Drs. Lee and Trojanowski are among the ten most cited neuroscientists in the world, and they have made major contributions to uncovering major disease proteins in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal degeneration. In its prize selection, the Taylor Prize committee noted their "unparalleled contribution to the field of neuroscience" and stated that "their work has had an immense impact on our understanding of neurological disorders and on our ability to develop focused therapies.” The prestigious international Taylor Prize, established in 1985, is named after the founding Chair of the Board at Robarts and includes a cash prize of $25,000, awarded annually to one or more individuals who have made significant contributions in basic or clinical research.
