PGY2 Pathology Resident Receives Penn Medicine CAREs Grant for Community Volunteer Efforts

December 02, 2015

Aivi Nguyen, MD, a second-year resident in the Combined Anatomic Pathology & Neuropathology Program, is the recipient of a Penn Medicine CAREs grant in support of community-based projects and volunteer programs. Dr. Nguyen has attended and volunteered at Vietnamese Mennonite Church for many years, where she and other youth group leaders saw a need for SAT prep and writing tutoring for the church’s young members. To this end, they founded "Woodland Writers," an academic support project with ten young people aged 13-16 from the church and surrounding disadvantaged area. Funding is going toward workbooks and other resources for producing the educational sessions.

Dr. Nguyen's volunteer efforts were recognized in a recent "CEO Column" by CEO Ralph Muller. Previous Penn Medicine CAREs awardees include staff member Qun-bin "QB" Xiong, Lab Medicine Specialist, for his volunteer work at the Main Line Chinese Culture Center.
