Recipients of Penn Medicine Awards of Excellence

September 13, 2018

Recently, the Dean's Office announced the 2018 Penn Medicine Awards of Excellence recipients. The distinguished awardees exemplify the profession's highest values of scholarship, teaching, innovation, commitment to service, leadership, and dedication to patient care. They epitomize the preeminence and impact the institution strives to achieve. The awardees range from those at the beginning of their highly promising careers to those whose distinguished work has spanned decades. Department faculty members who are among the 2018 award recipients are:

Bruce L. Levine, PhD, Barbara and Edward Netter Professor in Cancer Gene Therapy of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, co-recipient of the 2018 William Osler Patient Oriented Research Award

and

Robert W. Doms, MD, PhD, of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, co-recipient of the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Established in 1996 to honor Dr. Osler, a "Father of Clinical Medicine" who, in the 1880s at the School of Medicine, revolutionized clinical teaching research, the Osler award recognizes achievement for research in which an investigator directly interacts with human subjects. The winners of the prestigious University of Pennsylvania Lindback Award are determined by nominations and recommendations made by faculty and students. The awards were established in 1961 with the help of the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation.

Previous Osler Award recipients in the Department were Carl June, MD (2002) and James Wilson, MD, PhD (2014). Previous Department recipients of the Lindback Award include Drs. Beth Furth (2006), Don Siegel (2003), Glen Gaulton (1996), Deborah Gillette and Michael Laposata (1989), Mike Cancro (1986), Henry O. Trowbridge (1980), Arnold J. Rawson (1972), Peter Nowell (1967), and Leonard Berwick (1963). Dr. Carolyn Cambor was the recipient of the Provost Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Lindback equivalent for non-standing faculty, in 2010.
