Genetic Variation Predicts Type and Rate of Physical Decline in Parkinson's Disease

April 14, 2016

A Penn-led study has uncovered a site of genetic variation identifying which patients with Parkinson’s disease are more likely to have tremors versus difficulty with balance and walking. The study also found that patients with this genetic variation had a slower rate of Parkinson’s disease progression, and lower amounts of alpha-synuclein in the brain. The  The finding will be presented at the 68th Annual Meeting of American Academy of Neurology in Vancouver. Department members Drs. Vivianna Van Deerlin and John Trojanowski were part of the study.
