Residency Program Merger
InFocus • Summer 2025 Issue • September 12, 2025
Effective July 1, 2025, the pathology residency program at Pennsylvania Hospital (PAH) officially merged with the pathology residency program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). In early 2024, approval was granted by the ACGME to increase the HUP program’s complement from 36 trainees to 44 trainees. This expansion made it possible to merge the two programs, allowing HUP to welcome all six of PAH’s residents, while enhancing the training experience for all by providing:
• A consistent training experience for all trainees
• A single orientation and onboarding process
• Increased and simplified access to research funding
• Access to a wider variety of patient cases, practice settings, and research opportunities
• Streamlined and consistent scheduling for all rotations
• More flexibility in the timing of electives
Representatives from both HUP and PAH worked diligently for more than 13 months to ensure its success. The project team met bi-weekly throughout this time to develop a new curriculum and schedule, including call responsibilities, service rotations, and inter-hospital training between the two sites. Additionally, considerable effort was made to identify and address all administrative needs for each resident.
Below is a list of individuals who were instrumental in making this merger possible. Thank you all for your commitment, expertise, and relentless efforts throughout this process!
