Analysis of the Evolution of CAR T-cell Immunotherapy through Patenting Activity

An analysis of patenting activity around the emerging technology of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell immunotherapy by Nature Biotechnology demonstrates the importance of the University of Pennsylvania's contributions to the field. Penn ranks first among the top 20 global research centers and universities with 54 inventions and 428 patents filed. The analysis also shows that six of the top 20 global CAR-T inventors are members of the University of Pennsylvania. Included in the list are the top two innovators Drs. Carl June and Mike Milone from the Department, as well as faculty members Drs. Zhao Yangbing and Daniel Powell. John Scholler, from the June Lab, and Saar Gill, MD, from the Department of Medicine are also mentioned.
