Department Members Identified as Global Scientific Pioneers in Annual Highly Cited Researchers List

November 21, 2020

Department faculty members Drs. Carl June, John Lambris, Virginia M.Y. Lee, Bruce Levine, Leslie Shaw, John Trojanowski, and Xiaowei (George) Xu are listed as researchers who have demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. The analytics company Clarivate Plc recently released its list of Highly Cited Researchers 2020 that identifies researchers who "demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade." Their names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index, according to Clarivate. More than 6,000 researchers, in 21 fields of the sciences and social sciences, and cross-field categories were selected based on the number of highly cited papers they produced over an 11-year period from January 2009 to December 2019. With this group of faculty members, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has one of the largest contingents of the 51 researchers included from the University of Pennsylvania.

The full report, including the names and rank of the researchers can be downloaded from the Clarivate website. The 2020 "who’s who" list includes 6,167 researchers from 60 different countries, including 26 Nobel laureates, of whom three were announced this year (CRISPR pioneers Emmanuelle Charpentier, Jennifer A. Doudna and Reinhard Genzel). Read the Clarivate press release
