Transfusion Medicine Fellowship
Fellowship Overview
The Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Fellowship Program is supported by the Division of Transfusion Medicine and Therapeutic Pathology within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and is designed to offer the fellow exposure to all areas of clinical transfusion medicine and to provide opportunities for investigational (basic and translational) studies and enrollment in additional degree-granting programs (e.g. Masters in Translational Research, Masters in Regulatory Affairs, others).
The Blood Bank at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (a 789-bed facility) is clinically active in both adult and neonatal transfusion practices. The activities of the Division of Transfusion Medicine and Therapeutic Pathology include a reference laboratory, compatibility testing, component preparation, infectious diseases serology, cell processing for transplantation (peripheral blood, autologous and allogeneic bone marrow, umbilical cord blood), and CAR-T therapy, therapeutic hemapheresis including LDL-apheresis, apheresis for collection of hematopoietic stem cells and mononuclear cells for commercial and research trail products. Therapeutic phlebotomy, autologous blood, and a- cell and vaccine cGMP production facilities.
Transfusion medicine is a multidisciplinary field and as such our program offers research opportunities in molecular and structural immunology, genetics, coagulation, stem cell biology, gene therapy, cellular engineering, and microbiology. The program is approved by Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education and supported by an NIH T32 Training Grant for Transfusion Medicine Research. Training in pediatric transfusion medicine and exposure to a large blood center facility are part of the training program and provided through The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the American Red Cross-Penn/Jersey Division, respectively.
Requirements
Candidates must be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Pathology or another major specialty board. They must also be licensed or eligible for Pennsylvania licensure.
