Clinical Services

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a full spectrum of clinical support services, known for their operational excellence and strong academic bent. Together with top-rate faculty who are leading major research initiatives in clinical laboratory diagnostics, the Department provides clinical services to clinicians and other health care-providers within Penn Medicine, while also serving as a top-tiered reference laboratory at the regional, national, and international level.

Highlights

  • Comprehensive tissue diagnostics with extensive subspecialty expertise and innovation in diagnostic techniques, extending beyond traditional light microscopy to immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and specialized cytopathology testing, as well as new molecular diagnostic techniques
  • Laboratory Medicine Division performing 10 million diagnostic tests per year, many on a 24/7 basis, within specialized laboratories: Clinical Chemistry (including the Core Lab, Toxicology, and Endocrinology), Coagulation, Immunology and HLA, Microbiology, and Point-of-Care Testing, and operated by more than two dozen MD and PhD faculty members, and nearly 275 technical and support staff
  • Separate Transfusion Medicine and Therapeutic Pathology Division, serving as the therapeutic arm of the Department and encompassing blood bank and transfusion service, an immunohematology reference laboratory, an apheresis/infusion unit, a full whole blood and plateletpheresis collection program, a hematopoietic progenitor collection and processing laboratory, and a Clinical Cell and Vaccine Production Facility
  • Anatomic Pathology Consults with Subspecialty Second-Opinion Services
  • Specialized Division in Hematopathology for a spectrum of malignant and non-malignant hematologic disorders, including lymphomas, leukemias, and other causes of tumor formation and abnormal hematopoiesis
  • A specialized Division of Precision and Computational Diagnostics that includes Molecular Pathology and Cytogenetics, along with the Center for Personalized Diagnostics, a CAP/CLIA certified clinical laboratory for high throughput, next-generation DNA sequencing and other genomic analyses, including Custom NGS for hematologic malignancies
  • Specialized Neuropathology Division with ten highly experienced diagnostic neuropathologists also involved in training and biomedical research
