HEMATOPATHOLOGY

Hematopathology Services

Overview

The Division of Hematopathology encompasses the sections of Hematopathology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and is an integral component in new treatments of hematological malignancies using cellular therapeutic approaches. The Division is responsible for diagnosis and subsequent evaluation of a spectrum of malignant and non-malignant hematologic disorders, including lymphomas, leukemias, and other causes of tumor formation and abnormal hematopoiesis. The types of patient-derived samples analyzed consist of lymph node and other soft tissue sections, bone marrow core biopsies and aspirates, blood smears, and other body fluids (cerebrospinal fluid and pleural and peritoneal effusions).

Hematopathology faculty at Penn enjoy an international reputation for their research aimed at achieving a better understanding of the pathogenesis of hematologic disorders and, consequently, for their refined diagnostic and educational skills and more effective treatment protocols.

Highlights

  • Diagnostic modalities employed include microscopy, immunophenotyping by flow cytometry analysis and/or immunohistochemistry, and genetic evaluation by molecular and/or cytogenetic testing
  • Complex analysis occurs in cooperation with several different laboratories responsible for performing given tests and rendering interpretation, critical examination and integration of results
  • Diagnosis is frequently discussed with clinical colleagues responsible for care of a patient under evaluation
  • Faculty run an active ACGME-accredited-training program with three hematopathology fellows and eight resident physicians in training per 12-month period
