At the 2015 OR Manager Conference in Nashville, Tenn., Colleen Mattioni, Clinical Director of Perioperative Nursing HUP, and Ann Marie Morris, Nurse Manager Perioperative Quality and Safety HUP, presented on increasing awareness and interdepartmental partnerships around specimens. Mishandled pathology samples affect both patient safety and patient satisfaction, while increasing the potential for errors related to specimen integrity, misdiagnosis or the inability to provide diagnosis and treatment or both, as well as redundancy efforts by OR and laboratory staff. Department leaders from HUP Periop Nursing and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine supported a performance improvement methodology to identify the defects in current processes and the development of a web-based application, used as a real time resource for staff.
