Department Completes Offsite CAP Inspection

April 12, 2018

A team of twenty faculty and laboratory managers recently traveled to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center-Worcester to conduct a three-day inspection on behalf of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Led by team leader, Dr. Irving Nachamkin,  Director of the Division of Laboratory Medicine and CLIA Laboratory Director for HUP, the inspection team conducts inspections for CAP as part of the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program and accredits the entire spectrum of pathology tests disciplines with the most scientifically rigorous customized checklist requirements. CAP inspections use a peer-based inspection model and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine performs offsite inspections every two years as a requirement for its own CAP certification. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) grants the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program deeming authority, which allows CAP inspection in lieu of a CMS inspection. It is also recognized by The Joint Commission and can be used to meet many state certification requirements.
