UPHS Laboratory Test Formulary Committee Established

Irving Nachamkin, DrPH, MPH, FAAM, FIDSA, Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Director of the Division of Laboratory Medicine, has been appointed as Inaugural Chair of the UPHS Laboratory Test Formulary Committee by the UPHS Chief Medical Officer and the Committee for Clinical Effectiveness and Quality Improvement. Several years in development, this committee will serve as an advisory committee to provide oversight on matters related to the use of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine diagnostic testing across UPHS with a focus on reference laboratory testing, suboptimal and/or inappropriate testing, and to provide a mechanism to achieve consensus in support of safe and effective use of laboratory diagnostics in optimizing patient treatment and outcomes.
The Laboratory Test Formulary Committee is part of Penn Medicine’s overarching clinical effectiveness and quality improvement program to comprehensively evaluate and improve the quality of care and the efficient allocation of available resources in the provision of health care services throughout UPHS. The Committee comprises representatives from HUP, CCH, LG Hospital, PAH, PPMC, PMPMC, including members from the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of each entity, physicians from Departments of Medicine, Surgery and various other specialties, Nursing and quality coordinators as appropriate.
