On April 1st, 2025, Doylestown Health joined Penn Medicine. We are delighted to have over 75 new members of our department across the clinicians and staff there. We asked a few questions of the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine leadership there, Mercedies Lioni, MD and Allison Eck, DHA, to learn a bit more about them.
Can you share some information about yourself?
Mercedes: I am currently the Medical Director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and have been working at Doylestown since September 2022, did my residency at Drexel Hahnemann and did the surgical pathology fellowship at Penn in 2013-2014.
Allison: My name is Allison Eck, and I have been with Doylestown for 18 years. I started my career with Doylestown as the Lead Histology Tech. After serving in that role for about 13 years, I made the jump to Anatomic Pathology Manager. That was a short-lived position, lasting about 1 year and then I moved into the Administrative Director of Pathology and Lab Medicine where I have been since 2021. I received my histotechnology degree from Harford Community College and my bachelor's degree in biology from Lycoming College. I have gone on to receive my master’s and my doctorate both in healthcare administration, from Southern New Hampshire University and Franklin University, respectively. My doctoral research focused on survivor outcomes based on chemotherapy administration in the triple negative breast cancer population.
What makes you most excited about joining Penn Medicine?
Mercedes: I am excited to work for Penn Medicine because of its commitment to research and innovation, its impact on the community and having the opportunity to share and discuss cases with other talented pathologists in a collaborative environment with focus on patient care.
Allison: Having only worked in the community setting, both Doylestown and a community hospital in New Jersey prior, I am excited to learn more about the way larger academic institutions work. Penn brings research and advanced testing that I am excited to learn more about and see how Doylestown grows and fits into that model.
What unique/special skill or culture element does the team at Doylestown bring to Penn Medicine?
Mercedes: Doylestown Health has a strong sense of community with a positive work environment, most the employees have worked here all their lives making a meaningful difference.
