Specialty Division

Laboratory Medicine

Research Expertise

Research Interests: HLA genes and molecules in clinical transplantation

Keywords: Human immunogenetics, HLA genes and molecules. Clinical Histocompatibility, clinical transplantation, autoimmunity.

Research Summary:

Dr. Kamoun's research interest is to define the extent and nature of HLA haplotype genetic diversity and to understand the biological relevance of amino acid polymorphism in HLA class I and class II molecules. Computational and biostatical methods are used to evaluate the significance of HLA amino acid polymorphism in clinical transplantation and autoimmunity.

Another interest is to better understand the impact of B cell alloresponse and anti-HLA antibodies on allograft outcomes in clinical transplantation including islet cell transplantation. Clinical trials are used to assess the effectiveness of B cell depleting agents on alloantibody levels and allograft survival in transplant recipients.

Clinical Expertise

Clinical laboratory immunology: Diagnostic tests used in the evaluation of autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, and immune deficiencies.

Clinical histocompatibility testing: HLA genotyping and HLA antibody testing used for the evaluation of solid organ and allogeneic bone marrow/hematopoietic cell transplantion and donor selection.
