Renowned Surgical Pathologist Joins Breast Pathology Subspecialty Service

It is with great pleasure that we announce the arrival of Ira Bleiweiss, MD, as the Director of the Breast Pathology Subspecialty within the Section of Surgical Pathology in the Division of Anatomic Pathology. Dr. Bleiweiss comes to us after a longstanding career as a world-renowned breast pathologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

Dr. Bleiweiss received his BA in the Biologic Basis of Behavior from the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 and received his MD from St. Georges University School of Medicine.  Following medical school, Dr. Bleiweiss relocated to New York City where he did residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, followed by a Surgical Pathology fellowship at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. Following a fellowship in Anatomic Pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Bleiweiss started his pathology career as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at Mount Sinai School of medicine where he rose to rank of full professor becoming the Director of Surgical Pathology and more recently, the Director of Anatomic Pathology.

Dr. Bleiweiss is well-known nationally and internationally for his expertise in breast pathology and is the author of over 70 peer reviewed publications. Dr. Bleiweiss is the recipient of many awards, including being an Honoree at the 13th Annual Celebration of Life Gala for the Mount Sinai Breast Resource Program, recipient of the Senior Pathology Faculty Recognition Award by Residents for Exceptional Performance in Resident Education in Anatomic Pathology at Mount Sinai and Newsweek’s 2015 Top Cancer Doctors, to name a few. We are very fortunate that Dr. Bleiweiss has chosen to relocate to Philadelphia and to join our Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
