Drs. Kyle Rodino and Jalal Jalaly Selected as Two of ASCP’s 40 Under Forty

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) announced today that Kyle Rodino, PhD, MLS(ASCP), D(ABMM), Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Assistant Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, and Jalal B. Jalaly, MD, MS, FASCP, Assistant Professor of Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, are included in the ASCP 2022 “40 under Forty” list. This prestigious ASCP recognition program honors emerging leaders and innovators of pathology, laboratory medicine and ASCP. Applications were received from Pathologists, Pathology Residents and Laboratory Professionals, who are demonstrating stellar achievements in the early stages of their careers. A committee of ASCP pathologist, laboratory professional, and resident members evaluates candidates based on their accomplishments, experience, leadership skills, and their dedication to innovation in the field of laboratory medicine and pathology. For the ASCP, the nominees represent the achievements and qualities important to the pathology and laboratory sciences fields and stand out as the future of laboratory leadership.

Dr. Jalaly is board certified in anatomic, clinical, and cytopathology. He directs the school’s cytopathology fellowship program and is interested in head and neck and endocrine pathology. He completed his pathology residency at Washington University, in St. Louis, MO, followed by a surgical pathology fellowship. He then completed a cytopathology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Jalaly is a fellow of ASCP, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC), and is an active member in the Progressive Evaluation of Competency ASC Committee. He is dedicated to pathology education and directs the endocrine pathology course for the Perelman School of Medicine. His research focuses on HPV-associated squamous cell carcinoma and salivary gland neoplasms.

Dr. Kyle Rodino was formerly a medical technologist in the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC, and is board certified in medical microbiology. Dr. Rodino earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science from the University of North Carolina, a doctoral degree in microbiology and immunology from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and completed an American Society for Microbiology Clinical Postgraduate Educational Program (CPEP) fellowship in medical and public health microbiology at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Rodino is interested in optimizing clinical diagnostics, including the development and data-driven use of advanced molecular diagnostics, elevating the role of medical technologists and laboratory medicine on the healthcare team, and educating the next generation of residents and fellows through interprofessional educational opportunities.

Drs. Anna Moran, Lauren Schwartz, and Roseann Wu are among the current faculty members who were previously recognized as ASCP 40 Under Forty nominees.
