June 15, 2023
Enrique Olguín-Martínez, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Henao-Mejia lab, has been named a 2023 Pew Latin American Fellow in the Biomedical Sciences. His research will explore the correlation between stress and nutrition, specifically how diet-induced inflammation promotes childhood obesity. The unique perspective of his mentor and past Pew Scholar in Biomedical Sciences, Dr. Jorge Henao-Mejia, will undoubtedly enrich Dr. Olguín-Martínez's training experience.
The Pew Latin American Fellows Program in the Biomedical Sciences promotes scientific exchange and collaboration between investigators in the United States and Latin America by helping to support the next generation of researchers. The Pew Charitable Trusts provide the selected young scientists with funding for two years of postdoctoral training at leading research institutions in the U.S. Fellows who complete the program and choose to return to Latin America to establish their own research laboratories will receive additional Pew funding. According to Pew, approximately 70% of past fellows have chosen this path, helping to “build a more robust biomedical research community in Latin America.”
