Sharon Song, MD, an AP/CP resident at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, was elected as the new resident representative for Pathology to the AAMC Organization of Resident Representatives. Her term will run from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2020. In addition to her new role, Dr. Song was one of the Society of ‘67 Scholars of the APC-PRODS. She will join Nathan McLamb, MD, from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, who is now at the midpoint of his two-year term on the AAMC-ORR.
Under the leadership of Dr. Darshana Jhala, Professor of Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the Department of Pathology at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) is ranked No. 2 for all VA pathology departments. The VA department is also active academically, with 8 posters by physicians and medical technologists accepted to the ASCP annual meeting.
Dr. John Q. Trojanowski was one of three recipients of the Alzheimer’s Association AAIC Lifetime Achievement Awards at the the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2018 (AAIC 2018) in Chicago. The awards honor individuals who have made significant scientific contributions and demonstrated lifelong commitments to progress against Alzheimer’s and dementia. Dr. Trojanowski received the Khalid Iqbal Lifetime Achievement Award in Alzheimer’s Research for his research on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal degeneration (FTD), and related disorders. Dr. Trojanowski has made several discoveries of the major disease proteins in these disorders, and that aggregation and cell-to-cell spread of these disease proteins is a common mechanism underlying each of these conditions. His research has helped identify targets for potential drug therapies and treatments.
