October 11, 2017
At this year's annual AABB Meeting in San Diego, Don Siegel, PhD, MD, was awarded the second annual RISE (Research Innovation in Scientific Excellence) Award for best original research article published each year in Transfusion.
The award honors the author or authors of the best original research article published each year in Transfusion, as selected by the associate editors of Transfusion and approved by the National Blood Foundation Grants Review Committee. The award recognizes impeccable study design, innovation, significance, and effective communication in any area of knowledge covered by the journal. Senior author Dr. Don Siegel and Department co-authors Drs. Khalil Bdeir and Doug Cines were cited for their original research article titled "ADAMTS13 autoantibodies cloned from patients with acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: 2. Pathogenicity in an animal model" published in the 2016 volume year of Transfusion.
The article demonstrates for the first time the ability of human recombinant monovalent anti-ADAMTS13 antibody fragments to recapitulate key pathologic features of untreated acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) in vivo and provides an animal model for testing novel targeted therapeutic approaches.
AABB is an international, not-for-profit association representing individuals and institutions involved in the fields of transfusion medicine and cellular therapies.
