Visiting Clerkship for Underrepresented Minority Students in Medicine (URIM)

The Visiting Clerkship for Underrepresented Minority Students in Medicine (URIM) is designed to welcome a diverse group of medical students to Penn Pathology and provide an opportunity to experience the exceptional training offered. Visiting students will spend four weeks in either anatomic pathology or clinical pathology. Students will be active members of the pathology team and be directly involved in case evaluation; or spend time rotating through two laboratory areas based on their interest and selection with the course director. Labs available include Transfusion Medicine, Coagulation, Molecular Diagnostics and Personalized Medicine, Immunology, Microbiology and Clinical Chemistry. In addition to the daily activities of the rotation, students will attend Grand Rounds and other training conferences.

Opportunities will be provided for visiting students to interact with underrepresented minority faculty and house staff, as well as discuss their career plans with the Pathology Residency Program Director. Each student will be paired with a faculty member that will serve as a mentor and advisor. Accepted applicants will receive up to $1500 for reimbursement of travel expenses, housing, and registrar acceptance fee.

  • Applicants for the funded clerkship must come from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine. Under-represented in Medicine (URIM) refers to individuals from a background that is traditionally underrepresented in medicine, including but not limited to racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, identify as LGBTQ+, have disabilities, are first generation in the United States or first in their immediate family to attend college, or who otherwise would increase the diversity and inclusivity of our student and resident/fellow populations.
