Surgical Pathology Fellowship
Fellowship Overview
Seven one-year fellowships are offered to provide advanced experience in surgical pathology. These positions have received ACGME special selective accreditation. The surgical pathology practice of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania functions in a subspecialty model. The responsibilities of fellows include supervised sign-out of a comprehensive range of medical and oncologic surgical specimens and responsibility for frozen section diagnoses.
Fellows rotate through all of the surgical pathology subspecialty rotations typically during the first six months. They can choose 1-3 subspecialties (usually pre-assigned before the start of the fellowship) of particular interest for additional concentration towards the end of the academic year (last 3-6 months). Frozen section service and call will be incorporated throughout the year.
The available subspecialties are GI, GU (including medical kidney), Gyn, ENT/Endocrine, Pulmonary, Breast, Bone and Soft Tissue, Dermatopathology, and Cardiac Pathology.
The laboratory accessions approximately 50,000 surgical specimens per year. Candidates who demonstrate excellence in diagnostic skills, a firm commitment to teaching, and who complete a research project related to human disease, may be eligible for the H. T. Enterline Fellowship Award. Stipends are commensurate with the year of postgraduate training.
Requirements
Successful completion of an accredited residency program, and meets the requirements for certification in Anatomic Pathology or combined AP/CP by the American Board of Pathology and eligibility for Pennsylvania medical training license.
